| Craftsman and Cadet fountain pens are inexpensive school pens that Sheaffer introduced in the late 1950s. Though they do not have a snorkel, only the tip of the nib needs to be submersed in ink to fill the pen, what Sheaffer ads of the day referred to as “Tipdip” filling. Though the pens are inexpensive, they are of very good quality. They are a pleasure to write with, and they come in various pastel colors that were popular in the fifties and sixties. One weakness of Cadet pens (and Sheaffer’s Snorkel pens with plastic caps) is that they can develop stress fractures near the top of the pocket clip where it attaches to the cap. If the stress fracture is moderate to severe it will result in a crack and the cap is useless. If the cracks (fissures) are not severe, the fissure appears as a small, thin ink line and the pocket clip remains tight. Even small fractures will be noticeable since traces of ink do find their way to the surface over time. The pen is still usable, but it is advisable not to put pressure on pocket clips where stress fractures appear. | |
